Every child deserves the life-changing, transformative gift of music. Thank you for your interest. You are the reason MYC can transform lives through music.
MYC has been changing lives for nearly 40 years. Through choir rehearsals and small-group tutorials, MYC's choristers engage in a quality music education program learning music skills, self-expression and confidence, the discipline of practice that translates into progress, the wellbeing benefits of group singing, connecting with a strong community for a lifetime and potentially embarking on a career path.
What We Do
At MYC we take any child aged 3-20 regardless of background and ability, and no-one needs to audition to join. We place participants in a training or performance choir depending on age and ability, with a view to all children ultimately learning enough to join a performance choir. We take children as they are and provide them an environment that enables them to grow at their own pace.
We facilitate ten different choirs including a choir for children with additional needs. As well as choir rehearsals, children participate in small-group tutorials to learn the building blocks of music through a comprehensive theory program. The small groups enable more specialised attention and every effort is made to ensure that we can meet children's individual needs.
MYC's focus on Community provides a strong base for children to grow and thrive, facilitating the development of strong friendships between families.
A strong part of MYC's program are performances and workshop events for the community. We run an annual Community Big Sing workshops event, concerts in aged care facilities and other community performances as required. We love the way music brings people of ages, backgrounds and cultures together - a universal language.
How does your donation make a difference?
We use volunteers wherever possible to manage operations and keep costs to a minimum. We value music and the artists that create it. We value our highly qualified and professional team of musicians that conduct rehearsals and concerts. Your donation assists us to pay music staff and provide for their professional development. We have a beautiful rehearsal venue, and purchase teaching aids and sheet music and other needs like printing, stationery etc. We couldn't do it without you.
Just $40 will pay for a child to have a lesson at MYC. Sign up for a regular donation now!
Your donation is a gift of music to children and young people - the next generation of artists who will give the gift of music to the community into the future. Thank you!
The Power of Community Singing
"..singing not only helps forge social bonds, it also does so particularly quickly, acting as an excellent icebreaker. We’ve also shown that community singing is effective for bonding large groups, making it an ideal behaviour to improve our broader social networks. This is particularly valuable in today’s often alienating world, where many of our social interactions are conducted remotely via Facebook and Twitter.
Singing has also been shown to improve our sense of happiness and wellbeing. Research has found, for example, that people feel more positive after actively singing than they do after passively listening to music or after chatting about positive life events. Improved mood probably in part comes directly from the release of positive neurochemicals such as β-endorphin, dopamine and serotonin. It is also likely to be influenced by changes in our sense of social closeness with others." source:theconversation.com - 2015
